Flux Photo Essay: Where To Study

Welcome to finals week! We at the The Pulse are good at many things, and studying is one of them. But you can’t get a good study session going without a good place to settle down. Below you’ll find our favorite places to study on and around campus. Good luck on your tests!

-Marissa

My favorite place to study is the Architecture & Allied Arts Library in Lawrence Hall. I like it because it is one of the quietest spots on campus, and hardly anybody knows about it. Lawrence has a great energy, and the students that hang around there are such hard workers.

-Aubrey

When studying, I need to get out of the house, away from distractions like the TV or fridge. I like going to the Knight Library, but it can be chaotic at times with heavy foot traffic. I like to head to the fourth floor and find a desolate corner where I can settle in and focus on studying.

-Jamie

I love studying at Starbucks because there’s the perfect amount of background noise and people that it’s not uncomfortably lonely. It’s a great place to get term papers done and enjoy a pumpkin spice latte.

-Emily

When it comes to finding places to do a bit of studying in-between classes, I like to find a good place to sit in Lillis. There are many options, but I especially love sitting right outside the cafe located on the first floor. There, I can grab a coffee, turn on my iPod, and focus on work for a bit while people walk through the building on their way to their next destination.

-Whitney

Espresso Roma is my favorite place to study near campus because it’s well lit and always full of other UO students studying. On a grey raining day, it’s a great cozy spot to get work done.

Flux Photo Essay: Why We Love Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from the Flux blog staff! We celebrate what we’re most thankful for on this day, including the day itself. Here are just a few of the aspects of Thanksgiving that make this holiday a grand time.

-Jamie

My favorite part about Thanksgiving is the weather. I love the autumn leaves falling off the trees and the brisk wind chill that goes along with it. It’s the best season of the year!

-Whitney

One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is the Thanksgiving decorations. Every year my mom decorates our dining room table with flowers, candles, and little pilgrims, and it always looks so beautiful for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s the little things that make the holiday that much better!

-Rache’ll

The best part about Thanksgiving is the journey home. The anticipation of reaching my final destination is the most solid part of any holiday for me. Driving home from school, all I could think about was the moment I’d see my dogs when I walked through the door. Driving to my Grandma’s on Thanksgiving, all I could think about was how great it would feel to have some of the best people in my life together all at once. Sometimes it’s not about the destination—it’s about the journey, and it doesn’t get any better than going home on a beautiful fall day!

-Emily

My absolute favorite part of Thanksgiving happens after we eat the turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. We all sit down and play a game or two of Tripoli using the board that my grandfather made. It is an incredibly fun game to play, especially with a lot of people.

-Marissa

My favorite part about Thanksgiving is the neighborhood walk my family takes every year! It’s such a nice way to start the day, and you can spend time being active with the ones you love.

-Sam

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is, quite simply, deviled eggs. They’re a brilliant food, and my mum only makes them twice a year. I’ve tried to make them on my own, but it’s just not the same.

Flux Photo Essay: Why We Love Halloween

Happy Halloween!

This Halloween, we decided we’d celebrate the different aspects of this holiday we all love. There are so many things that can help make Halloween a success, and here are just a few of our personal favorites.

-Whitney

My favorite thing about Halloween is going to the pumpkin patch, finding the perfect pumpkin, and carving it. The best part about carving a pumpkin is being able to scoop all of the seeds out and toast them in the oven!

-Jamie

The best part about Halloween is definitely the costumes! There are so many options, and it’s the only acceptable time of the year to fully dress up in costume and take on a different persona. My personal favorite and go-to? A cat. You can’t go wrong with a traditional Halloween favorite.

-Rache’ll

The best part of Halloween is getting ready to go out! This is the one time of year where you can be whoever you want and wear whatever you want with no judgement. No outfit is too insane, no makeup is too much, and it is the perfect time to be as creative and crazy as you want!

-Marissa

My favorite thing about Halloween is the candy! It just tastes better on this holiday, and you can get it in the best assortments.

-Emily

Everyone knows that as soon as Halloweentown starts premiering on the Disney Channel, it is officially that time of the year. Whether it’s the The Exorcist or The Hills Have Eyes, Halloween movies are key to enhancing your month of fright. So make some hot cider, pop in a scary film, and cuddle up with a buddy because it’s Halloween!

-Sam

I always know it’s Halloween when, while walking around Eugene and campus, I find orange pumpkin faces staring at me from windows and sidewalks. Each one is individual, and each one differs in skill level of carving and personality. The only downside is having to watch them rot away through November and December.

-Aubrey

My favorite thing about Halloween is picking a costume that involves me and a mustache.
